“WeLoveU Environmental Scholarship” given to university students from six countries

The Intl. WeLoveU Foundation has been busy conserving the earth environment by signing an MOU on taking action against climate change together with the Gabonese president on March 26, carrying out the Global Clean World Movement to cope with climate change on April 29, and holding the New Life Family Walkathon to help climate refugees on May 13. Then the Foundation supports university student environmentalists of the world by giving them “environmental scholarship.”

Around 3 p.m. on May 23, the “2012 Scholarship and Grant Awards Ceremony for International Green Campus University Students” was held by the Intl. WeLoveU Foundation at the International Conference Hall of Basic Electric Institute, Seoul National University. To encourage and support university students’ environmental activities, the Foundation gave scholarship to the university student environmentalists who are actively coping with the environmental problems while studying hard. Embassies of several countries and global environmental organizations also supported this.

Ten university students from six countries—Korea (2), Indonesia (2), Bangladesh (2), Philippines (2), Germany (1) and Gabon (1)—received the scholarship. These foreign students entered Korea a day before the awards ceremony, and attended the “Gyeonggi Province Green Campus International Forum” that was held by Gyeonggi Province and Daejayon from May 24 to 25. University students who received scholarship on this day are those who make efforts for environmental movement. At the International Green Campus Seminar that was followed right after the ceremony, they shared ideas about the ways for Green Campus.

WeLoveU Foundation Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah and its members of the board, Gabonese Ambassador Carlos Boungou, Jakarta’s Director of Education Taufic Yudi Mulyanto and city officials, Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment officials, Professors Park Jong-geun and Bruce Waldman at the Seoul National University attended the ceremony to support the students. 40 university students also attended the ceremony and paid attention to the seminar. The group “Green Plus,” who sings to make people aware of the necessity of the environmental movement, prepared a special stage for the last part of the ceremony and received a standing ovation.

Chairwoman Zahng Gil-jah gave scholarship and gifts to the students, and expressed her expectation for the role of university students, saying, “As the world faces a series of natural disasters, it is not much to say that the world’s environment and peace lie in the hands of the young people. I hope that the campaign to save the world just as Green Campus Campaign will spread throughout the world. While preparing this ceremony, I’ve realized again that giving something to others is the happiest thing in the world. Now you receives, but I hope that you, too, will feel a greater happiness of giving something to others in the future.”

Gabonese Ambassador Carlos Boungou said, “Conservation of environment and climate change are the most urgent issue. We must do our utmost endeavors for it. Even though the global society has worked for it since the Rio’s UN Conference on Environment in 1992, it is not sufficient. So I hope that the leaders of NGOs will be concerned about the future of the world and take the lead in this effort.” Jakarta’s Director of Education Taufik Yudi Mulyanto gave thanks to the Foundation on behalf of the Jakarta’s Department of Education for giving scholarship to their students and asked the students to make more effort to protect the earth. Professor Bruce Waldman at the Seoul National University offered his congratulations to the environmental leaders of the future, talking about Korean environment where beautiful nature coexists with modern buildings.

Mohamed Abir Ahmed, who came from Bangladesh, said that he wanted to use the scholarship he received on this day for the education of the children in slums. He is devoting himself for the children in slums while working together with several organizations for the environmental movement, and he wished to learn the WeLoveU Foundation’s accumulated experience and apply it to Bangladesh, and become a leader who can contribute for the development of his country. The ten students felt proud of themselves to receive the honorable scholarship, and said that they had a good time to share opinions about Green Campus with the university students from various countries. They were determined to make more effort for the better environment.

A good memory in front of Seoul National University.
